Matt’s Story

Making the miles count

This Sunday marks the 41st annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Team Lynn Sage member Matt DeBole committed to making his miles count this year for The Lynn Sage Foundation’s breast cancer research initiatives.

“My wife and I have had a number of friends, family members, and clients battle breast cancer. Their enduring strength, courage, and determination is something I can proudly represent by supporting Team Lynn Sage. I feel good knowing the money I raise directly funds emerging researchers. I appreciate the difficulty many of them face when first applying for grants and funding.”

As Matt references, The Lynn Sage Foundation believes ambitious research is the key to changing the trajectory of breast cancer. The Lynn Sage Scholars are talented young researchers investigating novel and potentially groundbreaking theories. This program proudly invests in these doctors and their contribution to the field of breast cancer.

When faced with a breast cancer diagnosis, people often describe feeling a lack of control or that there isn’t anything they can do to help. Team Lynn Sage offers a way for runners (and walkers, cyclists, climbers) to make a direct impact in the fight against breast cancer. Our Chicago charity team participates in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon every October, the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle in March, and the Chicago Spring Half-Marathon & 10K in May. As an online running coach and physical therapist, Matt understands how powerful participating in a charity team can be.

“Everyone likes to be part of a success story and allowing others to support you in your race is an easy way to include people. I’m a big fan of sharing your training journey with your friends and family through social media and in person. Let them witness the hard work you’re putting in for your cause and race. Then, you’ll naturally encounter those who want to learn more about what’s motivating you and how they can help.”

There’s still time to support Matt and all the Team Lynn Sage runners in this weekend’s marathon. Donations can be submitted online and we’d love to see you at the Team Lynn Sage cheering section at Mile 7.5, just north of Belmont and Lake Shore Drive. Come out and enjoy one of the most inspiring days in Chicago!
