Even though October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month is over, the impact of the 10th Anniversary Chicago’s In Good Taste campaign continues. Over 190 local restaurants participated in The Lynn Sage Foundation’s Chicago’s In Good Taste, donating a portion of sales to fund local breast cancer research. Harry Caray’s Restaurants is a long-standing participant in this campaign, championed by owners Grant and Joanna DePorter.
“The fact that The Lynn Sage Foundation is local is very important to us because we are a Chicago-centric organization. We also like that the money stays here where it is needed most — for research, not fancy parties,”
shares Joanna DePorter.
Joanna’s viewpoint comes not just from supporting this cause, but from personal experience as a breast cancer survivor.
“It’s a coincidence that we were already involved in something that helped our community, and then it helped me personally. I feel lucky to be on the other side of breast cancer and now fulfilled that a cause we had supported for a long time was there for me when I needed it.”
Considering that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, Joanna isn’t alone in finding that a cause that already meant a lot to her intersected with real life. Harry Caray’s bartender, Sally Landmann offers,
“Everybody has somebody who’s been touched by some kind of cancer. But as a woman, breast cancer and Lynn Sage was very important to me.”
That sentiment seems to be shared by the entire Harry Caray’s staff, who, according to Joanna, do not need any motivation to get on board Chicago’s In Good Taste.
“In fact, they thank us for participating!”
Harry Caray’s signature Pink Drink special may have ended, but their iconic t-shirt is available year-round in pink, with proceeds benefitting the local breast cancer research of the Lynn Sage Scholars.
