Bio
Dr. Jeruss received her medical degree from the University of Vermont. She completed her general surgery residency training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern, having completed her dissertation in the field of breast cancer biology. She completed her fellowship in breast surgical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and returned to Northwestern as an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Breast Surgery before joining the University of Michigan faculty.
Dr. Jeruss’ clinical and basic research interests focus on novel therapeutics for aggressive breast cancer subtypes, new approaches to manage cancer metastasis, incorporation of fertility preservation into the care of young patients with cancer, and surgical ethics. Her research efforts, to date, have yielded new insights into the mechanisms associated with breast cancer cell cycle deregulations and the implementation of bioengineered scaffolds to forestall breast cancer metastasis.
Her research program is funded by the National Institutes of Health and she credits support from The Lynn Sage Foundation for preparing her for this prestigious funding. Dr. Jeruss was also the recipient of the Society of Surgical Oncology Clinical Investigator Award in Breast Cancer that supported the preclinical work for a study directed toward the treatment of patients with hormone receptor negative breast cancer.
